Coaching Approach
- I utilise a collaborative approach, not a directive one. I am not the coachee's boss or teacher. Coaching is a partnership of equals. If I think I have expertise or a resource to share, I will first ask the coachee if they would like to access it.
- I take a supportive attitude. The coachee must know that I genuinely want to help them. This includes taking a neutral stance and suspending judgment of the coachee's behaviour. It is not my job to tell the coachee what is 'right' or 'wrong'. My job is to help the coachee find solutions and the actions that are the right ones from their own perspective.
- My focus is on the coachee. I do not make suggestions of what I would do if they were in the coachee's situation. I do not try to solve the coachee's problems. My coaching is about working with the coachee to discover different approaches and help them get where they want to go.
- I believe in the coachee's potential. I do not think that coachees 'have a problem' or that they 'are a problem.' I recognise that the coachee is on a learning journey on which they have not yet realised their full potential.
- My coaching is about helping the coachee to make progress toward the future, not about getting stuck in the problems of the past. This means that I share a positive future and solution-oriented mindset with the coachee.
